Jubilee! Luke's Gospel for the Poor
Jesus, having stated “his commission to bring in God’s year of Jubilee,” is greeted first with enthusiasm and then with doubt, and finally is threatened with mob violence when he hints at the inclusion of the Gentiles within God’s purpose of grace.
As this study will show, to Jesus the poor includes not only Gentiles but also generals and widows, the demon-possessed and the leprous, the unforgiven and the unclean, the majority and the minorities. Even the rich learn that their only true treasure is the good news of Jesus Christ.
Whoever we are in Luke’s audience today, Jesus’ promise is for us.
